Celebrating Winnie the Pooh Day
Each year on the 18th of January we celebrate National Winnie the Pooh Day in the United Kingdom! This day celebrates the bear and the author of the Winnie the Pooh stories, A. A. Milne. We thought today is the perfect time to take a trip down memory lane and take a look at our favourite classic characters, and also at some Disney personalised baby gifts we have at Thats mine.
Who is Winnie the Pooh?
Winnie the Pooh is a fictional teddy bear created by English author A.A. Milne and English illustrator E.H. Shepard. Milne based the characters on his son, Christopher Robin, his stuffed animals, Winnie and friends Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga, Roo and Tigger and their country home in England’s Ashdown Forest. Tales of Winnie and his friends fun adventures have captivated children and adults over generations; all full of lessons about life, love and friendship. Then in 1961, Disney bought the rights to Winnie the Pooh and adapted the the Pooh stories into the beloved cartoon.
The Inspiration Behind Winnie
A. A. Milne named the character after a teddy bear owned by his son, Christopher Robin Milne. This is also who the character Christopher Robin was based. Christopher had named his toy bear after Winnie, a Canadian black bear that lived at London Zoo, and Pooh, a friend’s pet swan they had met whilst on holiday.
Shepard based his illustrations of Pooh on his son’s teddy bear named Growler, instead of Christopher Robin’s bear. The rest of Christopher Milne’s toys were incorporated into Milne’s stories. Christopher Robin’s toy bear is on display at the Main Branch of the New York Public Library in New York City.
